Tomorrow night at the Longbranch at 7pm will be a Linn County Republican Central Committee meeting. If you wish to get involved in selecting the candidate to run on the republican ticket please attend this meeting.

On Thursday September 22nd there will be a special nominating convention at the longbranch at 7pm where candidates can get nominated and voted on.

According to the article linked above the Democratic ticket will be decided behind closed doors. So at this time it does not look like the public will be able to get a hand in deciding who runs.

There are lots of open districts currently so attend the LCRCC meeting tomorrow to see if you can become a apart of the selection process.

Cedar Rapids has four positions — two at-large, District 1 and District 4 — open this year. this is an important election as the local teachers union is trying to stack the school board elections with their candidates.

To keep things simple , we are recommending these candidates for school board and recommending that we all vote NO on the secret Kirkwood tax hike but please read the detail below and make up your own mind.

Two incumbents – John Laverty, currently the board president, and Ann Rosenthal – have filed papers to retain their at-large seats. They will be challenged by Matt Ford, Karen Hartleb and Kathy Ulrich.

Kathy Ulrich. is in the same league with Sunny , both are radical members of a CREA and it seems both are trying to sneak into the school board.

August 20 is Lemonade Freedom Day! In response to a rash of kids' lemonade stands shut down for lack of licenses, permits, or other bureaucratic devices, father-of-two Robert Fernandes launched a site to promote a big citrusy celebration this Saturday. So go find some young 'uns and get ready to help them set up a lemonade stand for liberty.

His site also includes these helpful tips for lemonade stands under threat:

Always be respectful of any officials, follow their instructions even if they are wrong, and do not antagonize them.

Ask what is the statute or regulation that gives them the authority to shut down the stand, and what are the grounds for doing so.

Ask if the law or regulation specifically empowers them to shut down the stand or merely issue tickets for violations, especially a first violation.

Ask the officer if there are any exceptions in the rule for businesses owned and operated by minors, or businesses that earn below a certain amount (which may be referred to in the law or regulations as “de minimus”).

Ask to see the law or regulation.

Get the officer’s name and badge number, or if not a police officer, the official’s name, agency or department, and job title.

If possible, record the entire interaction on video (even if just a cell phone). *Please be aware of your state’s laws in regards to recording public officials. In some states it may be illegal.*

Do not offer the officials anything (including free lemonade) to overlook the violation.

Again, always be respectful of any officials, follow their instructions even if they are wrong, and do not antagonize them.

Below the tips, he mentions that a Colorado lawyer has volunteered to represent kids who get in trouble. Of course, helpful anarchists have served the same purpose in Portland.

For freedom bonus points, why not let older kids man the stand without adult supervision for a while?

No access to your own embryonic capitalists? Go find a kid to buy from, even if they're selling lukewarm Crystal Light! The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with subpar beverages.

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles is ending its red-light traffic camera program because it's losing money amid questions about whether it actually saves lives.

The City Council voted Wednesday to stop issuing photo enforcement tickets as of midnight Sunday, when the contract with an Arizona-based contractor ends. The city will work with the vendor to remove 32 intersection cameras and deal with existing tickets.

Some cameras under county transit agency jurisdiction will remain along rail and bus lines.

LA was losing $1.5 million a year because many drivers weren't paying the mailed citations. The courts don't report most scofflaws to the Department of Motor Vehicles so failure to pay doesn't affect a driver's license or insurance.

Supporters say red-light cameras prevent accidents but critics say there's some evidence they actually cause fender-benders.

Mark Meckler, 49, the co-founder of the Tea Party Patriots in the United States, talks to SPIEGEL about the US debt ceiling, the radical right's uncompromising fight against the national debt and the "complete economic disaster" he claims President Barack Obama has created.

SPIEGEL: The world is looking at Washington and sees gridlock and chaos. How much have the negotiations over the United States' debt ceiling hurt America's standing in the world?

Meckler: Saying that these debates have hurt our image is absurd. What you currently see in Washington is one of the most responsible debates ever about the size and scope of government. The world should look at what is going on in the United States as a model for what should happen in all countries.

SPIEGEL: We look at it and see a Congress held hostage by a small group of radical Tea Party members unwilling to agree to any budget compromise and risking a US default.

Meckler: What do you mean by "a small group?" Forty-one percent of voters in the last US election said they agreed with Tea Party values. And the primary values of the Tea Party are about fiscal responsibility.

SPIEGEL: But you are willing to accept a US default if your demands for massive budget cuts and no tax increases are not met. That seems rather irresponsible or even unpatriotic. Most leading economists forecast financial "Armageddon" in that case.

Meckler: Default is a false threat. We take in over $220 billion in revenues every month and our debt service is only roughly $20 billion. The only way we will default is if the President of the United States makes the irresponsible choice not to pay our debts. We Tea Party Patriots put principles first, and we have to understand what America is about. Our country was founded on an idea: liberty. But it requires fiscal responsibility for people to be free. We are becoming slaves to our own government. Every US family now owes $400,000 to $500,000 in national debt. We Tea Party Patriots fight for the future of the nation, and there can be nothing more patriotic than that.

SPIEGEL: Democracy is not just about winning fights. It can only function if all parties are open to compromise.

Meckler: The compromises that we have witnessed on debt have taken our country to the brink of financial collapse. Currently, the American government is spending 44 cents of each dollar on interest payments. We have compromised our way into disaster. None of the budget plans proposed have real cuts in them -- only promises to cut. The reality is that legally one Congress cannot bind the future Congress to cut, so these promises are actually a lie. We need real and immediate cuts.

SPIEGEL: The budget plan proposed by Republican speaker John Boehner contained massive spending cuts. Why were you so unwilling to embrace it?

Meckler: Look closely at the plan: It proposes $22 billion in cuts in the upcoming fiscal year. That is ridiculously little. It is the equivalent in the United States of shutting off the lights on Friday night and reopening at your normal rate of spending on Monday.

SPIEGEL: The plan also rules out any tax increases to close the deficit, though. Even the plan of the Democrats does not mention new taxes. So your movement already won the debate over taxes.

Meckler: This debate is not about taxes. This is a question of spending. There is no amount of taxes that we could raise that would stop our deficit spending caused by politicians who have lied so often.

SPIEGEL: Your movement often refers to Ronald Reagan, the Republican icon. But he raised taxes 11 times and the debt ceiling 18 times.

Meckler: At no time did he control both houses of Congress, so often he had no choice. But Reagan got attacked viciously by conservatives over this, just as we would attack any Republican president in the future if he did something similar.

SPIEGEL: The US economy is still growing very slowly. If you cut government spending drastically now, you will risk having a double-dip recession.

Meckler: That is simply wrong. Government spending is never efficient.

SPIEGEL: But in the short run, the cuts will lead to even higher US unemployment.

Meckler: Possibly on a minimal level. But we have worried about the short term for so long that we have damaged the long-term prospects of our nation. Look at what is going on in Europe: Spain is a complete disaster. It has more vacant homes than we have here, with only 40 million people. Italy is a complete disaster. Europe is going down the same path as the US, only many countries are far ahead and don't take corrective action.

SPIEGEL: Speaker Boehner failed several times to rally Republicans around his plans. Does he need to go?

Meckler: We have polled our membership and 74 percent of our members in our 3,500 chapters said it is time to look at new leadership.

SPIEGEL: And should he be replaced by a Tea Party representative?

Meckler: The ultimate goal is to have somebody in the House who is fiscally responsible. We have changed the debate in the United States, which is a pretty radical thing to do in such a short period of time. The question back then was: "How much more will we spend next year, not how much can we cut?" But you will see much more profound change in 2012.

SPIEGEL: Who could be the Tea Party candidate in the next presidential election?

Meckler: The movement has no clear preference. Our members are taking a cool and careful look at all the candidates on the Republican side. I am actually glad people are not more excited and blown away. The last time we saw that on the campaign trail, the country got Barack Obama in the White House -- and that led to complete economic disaster.

As the Tax Day Protests will soon be upon us, let us review why the Tea Parties are here and where the movement is heading.

Nobody is “behind the curtain, pulling the strings” of the Tea Party groups. There is no grand plan. Without any central control there are many Tea Party groups, each with a different motivation and reason for being. They are not an actual political party as they don’t run candidates. Tea Parties hope to influence politicians without being involved in an actual political party. Something akin to being a PAC or lobbying group.

The Tea Party’s goal is to reset/re-start/reboot government in such a way that it reduces its size and corruption; out of control spending; unsustainable deficits; bloated government employee compensation and pensions; the cost of wars; and taxation without representation. At present no major party embraces their issues. If that last statement offends any members of the D or R parties, send me a list of your party’s recent accomplishments to prove I’m wrong.

So why are tea parties forming now? Most voters don’t belong to political parties. Most Americans don’t even bother to vote. It is not that Americans are apathetic. A better answer might be that the choices the major parties provide are so appallingly awful, most voters choose to stay home on election day. If they don’t vote no one can blame them for buying into and legitimizing a corrupt system. Unfortunately as more voters leave political parties those that stay behind cause their parties to become more polarized. A small minority of party members select the candidates we vote on.

What does the future hold for Tea Parties? First, some people believe that the movement should become a true political party. If that were to happen then their candidates would need to address the entire range of issues dealing with foreign policy, abortion, health care, and so on. Most people just don’t have the stomach for it as you can see by looking
at how few people actually run the major parties.

The second thing that could happen to the Tea Party movement is that their issues would be absorbed. One major party may adopt some of their issues and the other party adopt their other issues. This situation is known as “politics as usual.” To have any influence, voters in the movement must be willing to vote against whoever opposes them. In many elections that will mean voting third party. If third parties become a power in America, our nation could adopt Instant Runoff Voting. Voters would vote for their first and second choice to select a winner. It would be like having free market elections. The better candidates would rise to the top regardless of political affiliation. Just as less choice results in higher-cost, lower-quality goods, greater choice would result in lower-cost, higher-quality government. I believe a major third party would be a good thing for Americans to embrace. Yet to date most voters don’t agree with me on this topic.

The final thing that could happen to Tea Parties would be they fade away. The Tea Parties might, but its members who are highly motivated, will carry on their struggle. Some political party will earn those voter’s trust. Without a political outlet for the movement’s energy things could get ugly. The last thing anyone wants is for peaceful protests to become violent opposition.

Some people believe that in simpler times the party bosses chose the candidates from the back of smoke filled rooms. Deals were struck, payoffs made, a good politician was one who stayed bought. It wasn’t corruption, it was business as usual. Now in the age of of the internet can’t politics be done differently? If Tea Party’s can produce the votes they won’t fade away. Parties in power will do what they must to stay in power. If Tea Parties become big enough to upset the balance of power, politics as we know it will never be the same. 2010 Is turning out to be a very interesting year.

Will the Tea Parties become America’s most powerful single issue group? Will they build a political home of their own? Or will they fade away? Whatever they are doing I believe they are changing America’s political landscape for the better.

Violations Count for 1st week of Red Light/Speed Cameras

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA -March 22, 2010 - The first week of violations for Red Light and Speed Camera Violations is in. There are 3 fixed sites and 1 mobile speed camera that have been capturing violations. These fixed locations include 1 Ave and 10 St East, 2 Ave and 10 St SE, and 2 Ave and 6 St SW. The mobile speed camera is moved to locations as needed. There was a 30 day grace period. This grace period ended March 14, 2010. During the first full week in which violations were enforced, March 14-20, 97 violations were recorded. Of these violations, 1 Ave and 10 St East, recorded 22 violations; 2 Ave and 10 St SE, recorded 29 violations; and 2 Ave and 6 St SW recorded 9 violations. The mobile speed camera was utilized only on March 19 from 7:00 - 10:11 a.m. and recorded 37 violations.

Today, the mobile speed camera was placed in the 700 blk I380 from 10:00 -11:30 a.m. During this 1 ½ hour time frame, 142 violations were recorded with a minimum speed of 11 mph over the posted speed limit.

In 2009, there were a total of 7 fatalities in Cedar Rapids. Four of the 7 fatalities occurred on I380. School zones, I380, Highway 100 and Highway 30 will continue to be a target for our mobile speed vehicle.

head of the linn county republicans steps down

Linn County Republican Chairman Tim Palmer announced his resignation as Chair at the organization's March 16th meeting.

Palmer cited his desire to devote his efforts to his friend's, Rob Gettemy, campaign to represent Iowa's 2nd Congressional District. Palmer announced he would not be attending future Linn County Committee meetings and that Co-Chair, Mark Hudson, will assume the Chair's duties.

Hudson was reportedly absent due to family illness and was not available for comment.

Veteran members of the Linn County Republican Central Committee had no prior indication of Palmer's intent to resign.. Many gathered afterward to discuss the immediate need to raise funds and organize for the 2010 election.

It was announced Mark Hudson will hold an informal gathering at 07:30, Friday, March 19th. The location is to be posted on the Linn County Republican Party's website. Any interested were encouraged to attend.

Mason City billboard equates Obama with socialism

MASON CITY, Iowa - A billboard in Mason City that feature a definition of socialism accompanied by the phrase "Obama-nation" is drawing complaints.

Mark Tlusty of Rockford spent about $400 to display the sign for a month. He represents a group called Concerned Citizens and helped organize an April anti-tax protest in Mason City.

He says the sign, which also displays the communist symbol of a hammer and sickle, demonstrates the believe that the country is headed toward socialism.

Kathleen Wild of Mason City complained that the sign gives the appearance that residents are intolerant.

DES MOINES -- A West Des Moines woman has filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission accusing the Iowa Christian Alliance of steering campaign money through a Burlington church, a move that gave tax-deductible status to political contributions.

Stacey Cargill, who left the Iowa Christian Alliance after her mother lost her position on the group's board of directors, argued in the complaint that contributions were made to West Hill United Methodist Church, then forwarded to the West Des Moines-based alliance.

The Iowa Christian Alliance is a key player in the state's Republican politics. The group states it isn't connected with any political party, but it's issues typically align with Republicans -- and its president, Steve Scheffler, sits on the Republican National Committee.

"The woman is not dealing with a full deck of cards," said Scheffler. "The woman is a troublemaker. She attacks everybody and anybody."

Cargill responded that she only wanted the FEC to examine her allegations.

"Mr. Scheffler will have to explain that to the FEC. Everything I have submitted to the FEC is 100 percent factual," she said. "I am a woman of honor. This is not a personal vendetta. This is trying to hold the leadership accountable."

Rather unfortunate news for those few people who still think the GOP can effectively represent part of the country’s mainstream.

As if it weren’t obvious enough by the actions of their leaders, the Wall Street Journal reports that right-wing activists are now poised to torpedo a Republican candidate in a New York race who is insufficiently beholden to GOP orthodoxy.

And they don’t look like they’re going to stop there. After they finish in upstate New York, they’re going to try and sink Charlie Crist in Florida:

"He was Judas to the Republican Party in the state of Florida and across the country," says Robin Stublen, 53, of Punta Gorda, co-state coordinator for the Tea Party Patriots, a loose national coalition. "He sold us out for 13 pieces of gold."

And they are not happy in Illinois:

"Personally, I'm just as fed up with the Republican Party as the Democratic Party," says Catherina Wojtowicz, coordinator of the Chicago tea-party group. "The Republican Party looks great on paper. But the people who call themselves Republicans, with a few exceptions, have no idea what the party stands for, or don't care."

This would all be somewhat understandable if the tea partiers were just some fringe figures with no influence on the mainstream of the GOP.

Unfortunately, it is becoming increasingly apparent that the tea partiers ARE the GOP, and they’re running the Republican show in Washington:

Republican leaders in Washington, such as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and House Minority Leader John Boehner of Ohio, are trying to align the GOP with the protesters' frustrations, praising their actions and echoing their arguments.

There you have it – a Republican party beholden to the far, far right, and continuously remaking itself in that model.

It seems that john McCain has finally got on board with something that has been an issue for the Ron Paul Campaign.

Net Neutrality is propsed like this: a law is made that prohibits internet providers from regulating what is sent through your internet connection.

the problem is that it then becomes regulated by the government, do you really want the government regulating what goes in and out of your internet connection ?

so when you hear about "net Neutrality" remember that its code word and there will be nothing neutral about it.

U.S. Senator John McCain has introduced legislation that would block the U.S. Federal Communications Commission from creating new net neutrality rules, on the same day that the FCC took the first step toward doing so.

McCain on Thursday introduced the Internet Freedom Act, which would keep the FCC from enacting rules prohibiting broadband providers from selectively blocking or slowing Internet content and applications. Net neutrality rules would create "onerous federal regulation," McCain said in a written statement.

For far too long, the Republican Party has been controlled by the “neoconservatives,” those who readily abandon the free market at the drop of a hat if it means expanding government power and who think the United States should be the policeman of the world. They want us to support those who throw substance and principle to the wind in favor of political expediency.

Last Monday night, Senator Lindsey Graham reiterated his disdain for Ron Paul and limited government conservatives at a town hall when he said that he was not going to allow the Republican Party to be “hijacked by Ron Paul.”

Instead, he thinks we should get behind those who he tells us “can win,” even if it means abandoning every belief we hold dear in the process.

In addition to his afternoon appearance on Judge Napolitano’s Freedom Watch, Congressman Paul will be responding to the neoconservatives on The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer tonight at 6 pm eastern and also on MSNBC’s The Ed Show at 6:30 pm eastern.

The newly formed Quad City Area College Republican Alliance, composed of young Republicans from several area colleges and universities, is sponsoring a Health Care Tea Party demonstration from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday in front U.S. Rep. Phil Hare's office at 2001 52nd Ave., Moline.

Participants are asked to bring their own signs, with no vulgar or inappropriate content, along with a canned good or other non-perishable item to donate to a local shelter.

"Young people in the 17th Congressional District aren't happy with their legislators right now," Mike Moehlenhof, president of the St. Ambrose University Republicans, said. "We want choice in our health care coverage, not a government takeover of the entire system. Phil Hare hasn't addressed young people at all on health care."

A few months ago I sent out an email to all of our candidates who are running for governor asking them if they supported ending the Hollywood transferable tax credit give away. only one candidate responded and did not support ending it at that time. it seems strange to give millions of dollars to make bad movies while the state of Iowa is in a financial crisis and borrowing money from our "savings" account.

well, it looks like another wasted opportunity be the republicans, at some point they are going to have be at the forefront of these types of issues and not playing catch up !

The Eye 380 Committee has beautified the I-380 and Boyson Road intersection using a grant from the Iowa Department of Transportation, and hope to beautify other intersections along the interstate. Eric Shepley, landscape architect at Hall & Hall Engineers, and Angela Cole, director of the Hiawatha Parks Department, both volunteered their time to help with the Eye 380 project. We had our first paid rabble rouser. I cant remember where I know this guy from, but I have seen him at political events before, If anyone knows him please let us know. the cops did show up and issued him a citation for disturbing the peace.

The Cedar Rapids Tea party was started by an Idea Tim Pugh had after the loss of moderate republican John McCain. Tim & Jeremy worked on the Ron Paul Campaign locally here in cedar rapids long before it was popular to be fiscally conservative.
